Virgilio Marino

Virgilio Marino studied piano at the Australian Institute of Music and voice at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He has been the recipient of the Tenor Award in the Sydney Performing Arts Challenge and the Dame Joan Sutherland Award. He was a finalist in the McDonald’s Operatic Aria Competition and a quarter-finalist in The Metropolitan Opera Award.

In 2000, Virgilio attended Mannes College of Music in New York performing the roles of Fenton in Falstaff and Prunier in La rondine and understudying the role of Alfredo Germont in La traviata. He made his professional debut at the Theater Regensburg (in Germany) in the roles of Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto and the title role in Oberon, and understudied the role of Oronte in Alcina. In 2003, he travelled to Italy for further studies where he performed with students from Teatro alla Scala’s Academy of
Performing Arts in a production of Petite Messe Solennelle.

Virgilio was a member of Opera Queensland’s 2006 Young Artist Program. His performances for the company include the roles of Nemorino in The Elixir of Love, Jaquino in Fidelio, Gastone in La traviata, Pong in Turandot, Monostatos in The Magic Flute and Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet. He also performed the role of Borsa and understudied the role of Duke of Mantua (which he subsequently performed on Opening Night) in Rigoletto, understudied the roles of Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville and Tamino in The Magic Flute, and performed in The Food of Love and in the
ensemble of Die Fledermaus. Other engagements include the roles of Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi (for Southern Opera in New Zealand), Harry in La fanciulla del West (for State Opera of South Australia), Howard Boucher in Dead Man Walking (at the State Theatre in Sydney), Alfredo Germont in La traviata (at the Majestic Theatre in Pomona) and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly (for Simply Opera).

Virgilio’s concert repertoire includes the Verdi and Mozart Requiems, Enescu’s Vox Maris, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, Schütz’s Christmas Oratorio, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle and Mozart’s Mass in C minor. His engagements include the Victor Chang Charity Concert (at the Sydney Town Hall for its then patron, Princess Diana), the Italian Republic Day Concert (at Darling Harbour), the Miss Italy Quest (at the Sydney Opera House), Opera in the Vineyard (at Stanthorpe), Opera at Brookfield (at the 2008 and 2009 Brisbane Festivals) and
singing the national anthem at the One Day Cricket Test at the Gabba (the
Queensland Cricket Ground).
